Senate Approves Law on the Protection of Intellectual Property Rights and Public Procurement

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — During the 12th plenary session, the Senate of the Oliy Majlis considered the law “On Amendments and Additions to Certain Legislative Acts of the Republic of Uzbekistan.”

Senators noted that in recent years the country has been implementing large-scale reforms aimed at increasing the accountability of government bodies, establishing a streamlined management system, and improving the processes for meeting the needs of public customers in goods, works, and services.

During the discussion, the necessity of enhancing mechanisms for reviewing applications from individuals and legal entities, strengthening the responsibility of state bodies and organizations, and protecting intellectual property rights and trademarks was emphasized.

It was also noted that demand for trademark registration in Uzbekistan continues to grow steadily: in 2023, 3,155 certificates were issued, while in the current period of 2025, this number has already reached 4,484.

Amendments to the Law “On Trademarks, Service Marks, and Appellations of Origin of Goods” now provide for the early termination of a trademark certificate at the request of an interested party or based on a court decision in the event of the liquidation of a legal entity that owns the trademark, or the death of an individual owner without a will and legal heirs.

The Code of Administrative Liability establishes responsibility for officials who fail to conduct a comprehensive review of direct contracts for public procurement that are subject to such checks.

Senators stressed that the new provisions are aimed at effectively protecting intellectual property, preventing inconsistencies in law enforcement practices, and ensuring transparency in public procurement processes.

Following the discussion, the law was approved by the Senate.
