Senate Approves Law on the Peaceful Use of Atomic Energy in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — At the 12th plenary session of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, lawmakers reviewed a law “On Amendments and Additions to the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan ‘On the Use of Atomic Energy for Peaceful Purposes’.”

Senators noted that amid global growth in electricity demand and Uzbekistan’s accelerated economic development, the country’s need for electric power could reach 120–125 billion kilowatt-hours by 2030. The President’s active investment policy, aimed at expanding existing capacities and creating new energy sources, as well as the implementation of programs to improve living standards, requires reliable and sustainable energy solutions.

The development of nuclear power is viewed as a key element in forming a stable national energy system. The coordinated operation of large and small reactor units enhances grid resilience and enables the effective integration of renewable energy sources.

In accordance with a presidential decree dated May 24, 2024, the Atomic Energy Development Agency under the Ministry of Energy was reorganized into the Atomic Energy Agency under the Cabinet of Ministers. The new structure has expanded functions and priorities, ensuring more effective governance of the nuclear energy sector.

The adopted law clarifies the powers of state bodies, formally designates the Atomic Energy Agency as the authorized body in this field, and ensures alignment of national legislation with international standards for the safe and peaceful use of atomic energy.

Senators emphasized that the document contributes to improving the system of public administration in nuclear energy, strengthening nuclear and radiation safety, expanding international cooperation, and enhancing Uzbekistan’s standing in the field of nuclear security.

Following the discussion, the law was approved by the Senate.
