Senate Approves Law on the Legal Status of Environmentally Clean Territories in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — At a regular plenary session of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, lawmakers reviewed and approved the Law “On Introducing an Amendment to the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan ‘On Protected Natural Areas’ in Connection with Establishing the Legal Status of Environmentally Clean Territories.”

During the discussion, it was noted that Uzbekistan continues systematic efforts to protect natural areas, expand their coverage and preserve unique natural ecosystems, flora and fauna. At present, the total area of protected natural territories amounts to 6.3 million hectares, representing 14.2 percent of the country’s territory.

Special attention is being paid to the development of tourist zones aimed at the rational use of the recreational potential of mountainous regions, stimulating entrepreneurship and creating jobs through the construction of resorts, hotels and cultural and wellness infrastructure.

The adoption of the amendment to the Law “On Protected Natural Areas” is intended to establish the legal status of environmentally clean territories. Under the law, such territories are defined as areas within resort and recreational zones where environmental impact does not exceed established standards, energy-efficient infrastructure and effective waste management systems are in place, and a high recreational and ecotourism potential along with rich biodiversity is preserved.

Activities that undermine ecosystem sustainability, alter landscapes or affect the hydrogeological condition of groundwater are prohibited in these areas. The construction and operation of industrial facilities that have a negative impact on natural ecosystems are also banned.

Senators emphasized that the adoption of this law strengthens the country’s environmental security, promotes the development of ecotourism, ensures the preservation of natural heritage and biodiversity, and enhances Uzbekistan’s environmental image on the international stage.

The law was approved by the Senate.
