Senate Approves Law on Distribution of Powers Among Local Authorities

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — At its twelfth plenary session, the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan discussed and approved the law “On Amendments and Additions to Certain Legislative Acts of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Connection with the Improvement of Local Government Authorities’ Activities.”

Senators emphasized the need for the law to harmonize existing legislation with the provisions of the new Constitution and to separate the positions of the chairperson of the local Kengash and the hokim (executive head). As a result, amendments were made to 9 codes and 69 laws, redistributing powers between representative and executive bodies at the local level.

Under the new law, local government functions will be organized according to the principle of a strong Kengash accountable to an active hokim. At the same time, eight overlapping functions previously handled by republican bodies have been eliminated.

Senators highlighted that the adoption of this law is a significant step in the administrative reforms of the New Uzbekistan, aimed at implementing a modern model of state governance and strengthening the legal framework for local authorities.

The law was approved by the Senate.
