“Scary pictures” to appear on packs of cigarettes

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - The Cabinet of Ministers approved the sketches that appear on packs of cigarettes.

On 11 November 2019, the Ministry of Health published a draft government resolution, which amends the technical regulation on tobacco products. Drawings will be on both sides of the packs of cigarettes. Resolution of thumbnails of medical warnings is at least 300 dpi (dots per inch). The dimensions of the warning are changed so that the warning area is at least 40% of the area of each of the main sides of the consumer packaging and unit. In any case, the proportions of the applied image can be changed by no more than 20% with respect to the proportions of the approved samples.

Uzbekistan is far from the first country to use such a creative approach in the fight against smoking. Similar measures have already been taken by public health authorities in thirty countries around the world.

The Ministry of Health expects that this measure of influence should affect everyone, and only novice smokers, or those who have long wanted to quit, but will not find the strength to fight a bad habit, will be particularly affected.

Thumbnails of medical warnings will be updated in the form of a picture and a photo image, including a text inscription, no more than once every five years.

The manufacturer or importer must apply the newly approved warning samples within a period not exceeding 12 months from the date of their approval.
