Samarkand to Host International Astronautical Congress 2028

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Samarkand has been selected as the host city of the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) 2028, marking the first time in history that the global forum will take place in Central Asia. The decision was announced in Sydney during IAC-2025, where Uzbekistan outpaced competing bids from India and Bahrain.

The choice of Samarkand carries special symbolism: more than six centuries ago, the city became a hub of science and knowledge with the construction of one of the world’s largest observatories, initiated by Mirzo Ulughbek.

Now, the world’s premier space event returns scientific prestige to Samarkand. Experts describe the decision as recognition of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s efforts to promote science and education, as well as evidence of Uzbekistan’s growing international standing.

The congress is expected to draw more than 10,000 participants and will include a large-scale exhibition. Hosting the event is projected to bring significant economic benefits — for comparison, Australia earned more than US$27 million from a similar forum. Even more importantly, experts predict that the congress will inspire Uzbekistan’s younger generation, sparking a surge of interest in space science and innovation.

Uzbekistan has been prioritizing education and support for talented youth, and organizers believe that the IAC in Samarkand will inspire future researchers and scientists who will continue the legacy of Mirzo Ulughbek and strengthen the country’s scientific reputation worldwide.
