Rustam Azimov meets with South Korean President

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- First deputy Prime-Minister of Uzbekistan - Minister of Finance Rustam Azimov held negotiations with the President of the Republic Korea Park Geun-hye on 19 December 2013.

During the meeting, the South Korean President said that existing joint projects between the two countries are going smoothly, including one that calls for developing the Surgil gas field and building of the Ustyurt gas-chemical complex.

In his turn, Rustam Azimov said that South Korea is an important partner for Uzbekistan’s efforts to expand infrastructure and modernize its industries. He also said his government has a great deal of trust in Korean companies.

Azimov said that cooperation between the two countries is going smoothly in information technology areas, including Uzbekistan’s efforts to set up an electronic government, and expressed hope to host a branch of a Korean university with IT expertise in Tashkent.

South Korean President said she hopes such cooperation will move forward further. She also said she hopes to see greater cooperation between the two countries in the area of solar power generation, saying South Korea is paying a lot of efforts to tackle climate change and other environmental issues, according to the office.

Azimov welcomed and promised to back Park’s “Eurasian initiative”, which calls for binding Eurasian nations closely together by linking roads and railways to realize what she called the “Silk Road Express” that runs from South Korea to Europe via North Korea, Russia and China.

He also relayed Uzbek President Islam Karimov’s formal invite to Park to visit the country. Park agreed to pay a visit in the near future.
