Rustam Assakalov Named as Asia’s Coach of the Year
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Rustam Assakalov, head coach of Uzbekistan’s Greco-Roman wrestling team, has been honored as “Coach of the Year” by UWW Asia. The award ceremony took place in Bishkek during the opening of the Asian Senior Wrestling Championships, the National Olympic Committee reported.
In February 2026, under Assakalov’s leadership, the Uzbekistan team performed successfully at the Zagreb Open international tournament, winning one gold, four silver, and one bronze medal, securing second place in the overall team standings behind Iran.
The recognition also highlighted the achievements of Uzbek athletes on the global stage. Notably, 19-year-old wrestler Ayatjan Khalmakhanov became the world champion among seniors last year, breaking a 24-year-old record.
Khalmakhanov was also named “Most Dominant Wrestler of the Year” by UWW for 2025, underscoring his top-level performance and leadership in the sport worldwide.
