Rosatom: Design Documentation for Uzbekistan’s Small Modular Nuclear Plant to Be Ready by End of 2025
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Russian state corporation Rosatom will complete the development of design documentation for the small modular nuclear power plant (SMNP) in Uzbekistan by the end of 2025 and submit it to the client for review, the corporation’s press service reported.
Currently, engineering surveys are underway at the future plant site in the Jizzakh region, and a construction and assembly base is being established.
According to Rosatom, the design documentation will be prepared and delivered to the Uzbek side before the end of 2025.
On Thursday, a ceremonial groundbreaking took place at the future SMNP site, with machinery excavating the first cubic meters of soil.
“Today marks a new phase in the implementation of Uzbekistan’s nuclear power project. As with all of Rosatom’s international projects, a high level of localization is ensured in the construction of the small modular plant. The work is carried out by Uzbek subcontracting organizations. Rosatom will build a plant with a service life of at least 60 years and provide comprehensive support during its operation. We are looking forward to decades of fruitful and mutually beneficial cooperation,” stated Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachyov.
The contract for the construction of Uzbekistan’s first nuclear power plant was signed on May 27, 2024. The project envisages the construction of an SMNP in the Jizzakh district, consisting of six reactors with a capacity of 55 megawatts each.
The general contractor is Atomstroyexport JSC, part of Rosatom’s engineering division. Local companies, including Enter Engineering, are also involved in the project.
As previously reported by Russia’s Ministry of Economic Development, in 2025 the presidents of Uzbekistan and Russia agreed to expand cooperation in nuclear energy, including the construction of a two-unit large nuclear power plant and a two-unit small modular plant in Uzbekistan.
