Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Romania and the Republic of Uzbekistan are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
To mark the occasion, His Excellency Daniel Cristian Ciobanu, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania to Uzbekistan, delivered a lecture at the Tashkent State University of Economics.
Addressing faculty members and students, the ambassador emphasized the importance of this milestone, noting the dynamic development of Romanian–Uzbek cooperation over the past three decades.
“Romania highly values the relations of mutual respect and friendship with the Republic of Uzbekistan. We see significant potential for further expanding cooperation in the political, economic, cultural, and educational spheres,” said the ambassador.
According to Daniel Cristian Ciobanu, Uzbekistan has demonstrated remarkable achievements in socio-economic reforms since gaining independence, creating new opportunities for bilateral cooperation.
The ambassador also highlighted the growing interest of Romanian businesses in Uzbekistan, noting that the volume of bilateral trade increased by more than 316 percent between 2020 and 2024. He added that, according to Romania’s National Institute of Statistics, in 2024 Romania’s exports to Uzbekistan exceeded those recorded with several countries of the Caucasus and Caspian regions.
Ciobanu reaffirmed Romania’s commitment to supporting the expansion of dialogue between Uzbekistan and the European Union. In this context, he underlined the importance of the upcoming signing of the new Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between the EU and Uzbekistan, which will mark a new stage in relations between Tashkent and Brussels.
Sharing personal reflections with the students, the ambassador spoke about his traditional mountain ascents on national holidays: in 2021 he climbed Mount Greater Chimgan (3,309 m), in 2022 — Mount Hazrat Sultan (4,083 m), and in 2023 — the Pulathan Plateau (2,823 m).
In addition, to mark the 161st anniversary of Romanian diplomacy, he took a hot-air balloon flight along the Samsarak–Parkent route, describing these symbolic actions as “ascents to new heights of friendship” between the peoples of Romania and Uzbekistan.
In conclusion, the ambassador expressed gratitude to Tulkin Zakirovich Teshabayev, Rector of the Tashkent State University of Economics, for his hospitality and organization of the event, noting that such meetings contribute to strengthening cultural and educational ties between the two countries.
