Ravshan Irmatov: Fabio Cannavaro Tasked with Preparing Uzbekistan National Team for the World Cup

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The new head coach of the Uzbekistan national football team, Fabio Cannavaro, has been given a clear mission — to prepare the team for a strong performance at the upcoming FIFA World Cup, said Ravshan Irmatov, First Vice President of the Uzbekistan Football Association.

According to Irmatov, the UFA leadership has expressed full confidence in the Italian specialist during this crucial stage. To ensure continuity and stability, Timur Kapadze will continue serving as assistant coach.

Irmatov expressed deep gratitude to all professionals who contributed to Uzbekistan’s historic qualification for the World Cup, particularly Srečko Katanec and Timur Kapadze.

“The World Cup is a global event that captures the attention of millions. That’s why we decided to invite a coach with personal experience of playing at the world’s biggest stage,” Irmatov emphasized.

He noted that both the UFA leadership and the Coaching Council unanimously agreed that Fabio Cannavaro was the best choice to guide the team through its World Cup preparation.

“Cannavaro is one of the greatest defenders in football history — a World Cup champion and Ballon d’Or winner. Whether we like it or not, success at the World Cup is impossible without a solid defense. He embodies confidence, discipline, and leadership at the back. We believe his international experience, professional culture, and tactical precision will bring fresh energy to our team and introduce a modern playing philosophy,” said Irmatov.

He added that the contract with Cannavaro follows a ‘2+3 years’ format, underscoring the long-term nature of the partnership.

“We see this cooperation as strategic and are confident that under Cannavaro’s guidance, the Uzbekistan national team will perform with dignity both at the AFC Asian Cup and the FIFA World Cup,” Irmatov concluded.
