QazaqGaz and Uztransgaz Sign Contract for Gas Transportation Through Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Kazakh company QazaqGaz and the Uzbek company Uztransgaz have signed a contract for the transportation of natural gas through the territory of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

The document was signed by Askar Isakov, Acting Chairperson of the Management Board of Uztransgaz, and Alibek Zhamauov, Chairperson of the Management Board of QazaqGaz.

The agreement formalizes previously reached arrangements to ensure stable gas transportation and strengthens cooperation in the gas transmission sector.

The contract will serve as a foundation for enhancing the reliability of regional gas infrastructure and will guarantee uninterrupted supplies during the autumn–winter season.

It should be recalled that in June 2023, Uzbekistan and Russia signed a two-year contract for the supply of Russian gas to Uzbekistan. Under the agreement, the parties approved a roadmap for preparing Uzbekistan’s gas transmission system to receive and transport Russian pipeline gas.

Deliveries were launched in October 2023 through Kazakhstan in reverse mode along a specially designated route based on the Central Asia – Center trunk pipeline system. Under the contract, annual supplies of Russian gas to Uzbekistan amount to 2.8 billion cubic meters.

Uzbekistan has expressed interest in increasing supply volumes. During his visit to Tashkent in May 2024, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced ongoing work to expand the capacity of the Central Asia – Center system, which would enable an increase in gas transportation to Uzbekistan to 11 billion cubic meters per year by 2025.

Earlier, the first stage of a modernization program for the trunk gas pipeline network was announced, aimed at increasing natural gas imports in the northern direction from 2024 to 2030. The project’s cost is estimated at US$500 million. After modernization, supplies of Russian gas to Uzbekistan are expected to rise from 9 to 32 million cubic meters per day.
