Prevention of crime among women: national experience and international practice

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 10 December  2019, a round table was held on the topic “Women’s participation in the prevention of violent extremism and other crimes among women using examples of best national and international practices”.

The event, organized by the Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Gender Equality together with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), was attended by members of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, representatives of several state and non-state structures, as well as the media.

It was noted that the acquisition by women of their place in the family and society, their active participation in the socio-political life of the country, in many respects depends on the country’s conditions and the assistance provided to them. At the same time, not only the issue of supporting the initiatives of women and the comprehensive protection of their rights is relevant, but also the issue of preventing crime among them. From this point of view, the issue of studying and eliminating factors contributing to the antisocial behavior of women is in the focus of attention of structures involved in ensuring gender equality.

During the event, which was devoted to this issue, attention was paid to the reasons that lead to offenses among this population. In particular, in the framework of the first session of the round table, international and national practices in the field of combating criminal activity, taking into account the gender factor, were considered.

In recent years, specific measures have been taken to ensure an effective mechanism to realize the interests of women. At the same time, special attention is paid to the prevention of crime among women through the promotion and employment of women in difficult social situations, the solution of their housing problems, and the prevention of early marriage and divorce.

During the "round table" it was noted that in this process attention is paid to individual work and approach to every woman in need. From this point of view, it was emphasized that the national experience of Uzbekistan regarding the activities of women inspectors deserves special attention.

Issues related to the role of gender in the prevention and counteraction of violent extremism and radicalism leading to terrorism, and best practices of law enforcement agencies were also discussed.

The round table participants examined the experience of the Women’s Committee on the early prevention of crime among women, mainly through individual work with those who are inclined to commit crimes, as well as through the implementation of measures for social rehabilitation and adaptation of women who have been released from penal institutions.

At the end of the event, groups discussed the recommendations for the OSCE and the Senate Committee on Women and Gender Equality on joint initiatives to prevent and combat transnational crimes committed by women.
