President Reviews Results of Water Supply Modernization Project in Surkhandarya Region
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — President Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed in Termez the practical results of a large-scale project to improve drinking water supply in Surkhandarya Region, implemented using the resources of the Tupalang Reservoir.
In recent years, consistent reforms have been carried out in the country's water management system, irrigation infrastructure has been modernized, and the rational use of water resources has been improved.
The mega-project in Surkhandarya Region, valued at 287 million dollars, has become one of the most striking examples of the successful implementation of such initiatives. Extensive construction and installation work was carried out, and thanks to the introduction of modern technologies, mineral-rich drinking water is now supplied without interruption to ten districts of the region and the city of Termez.
Whereas eight to nine years ago the coverage of centralized water supply stood at 47%, it has today reached 67.5% — an improvement that encompasses not only quantitative indicators but also water quality.
The President emphasized the importance of supporting strategic projects of this kind and the value of applying the experience gained to similar initiatives in other regions of the country.
A key technical feature of the project was the construction of 246 kilometers of trunk and household water networks, as well as the organization of pressurized water delivery without the use of pumps — an approach that has significantly reduced energy consumption and enhanced system reliability.
Water is now supplied to the city of Termez and to the district centers of Angor, Bandikhan, Qiziriq, Sherobod, and Muzrabad. As a result, water supply has been stabilized across 223 mahallas, and water hardness has been reduced by nearly half, benefiting both public health and the lifespan of household appliances.
A geoinformation center has been established at the Shimoliy water supply facility, enabling real-time monitoring of the system's condition and the prompt detection of pressure drops, emergency situations, and water losses. The project has also eliminated the need to operate more than a hundred local boreholes, thereby reducing the environmental burden.
Annual electricity savings reach 18.4 million kilowatt-hours, equivalent to approximately 18.5 billion soums. Connecting consumers to a billing system has improved transparency in water payments and reduced arrears. Solar panels with a total capacity of 6,418 kilowatt-hours have been installed across a ten-hectare site.
During the visit, the head of state also reviewed the region's hydropower indicators and promising projects in this field. Instructions were given for the prompt replacement of outdated pumping units with energy-efficient alternatives and the modernization of networks to further improve the reliability and quality of water supply.
