President Approves Plans to Triple Green Zones in Tashkent

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed a presentation on urbanization development projects and the expansion of green spaces in Tashkent, stressing the need for a comprehensive approach to developing the capital in the context of its rapidly growing population.

The city's permanent population currently exceeds 3.1 million and is projected to more than double by 2045, requiring proportional development of housing stock, transport, logistics and engineering networks, and social infrastructure to match the growing demand.

Expanding green zones has been identified as a priority task. Plans call for increasing their total area threefold to 25,000 hectares, and raising green space per capita from 3 to 6 square meters. As part of the preparatory work, 85 project proposals covering a combined area of 2,679 hectares were presented.

Following a comprehensive review, 18 proposals received approval for implementation, 12 were recommended for optimization with adjustments to plot area, building height, and concept, while 54 were deemed to require a complete conceptual revision. Particular emphasis was placed on avoiding infill development on plots of less than one hectare and on incorporating a minimum of 30% green space in every project.

Separate consideration was given to plans for expanding the Yangi Avlod industrial zone in the Yangihayot district, including the phased relocation of large enterprises from the city center and the placement of clean, high value-added manufacturing facilities.

The implementation of the approved projects is expected to generate an additional 1.5 billion dollars in gross regional product annually, deliver 3.5 trillion soums in budget revenues, and create approximately 260,000 new jobs. Nine locations across the city are earmarked for the creation of new public parks covering a total area of 134 hectares.

The President instructed that revenues from infrastructure payments be directed first and foremost toward the creation of green zones while also ensuring the development of urban infrastructure facilities, with particular attention to aligning urbanization processes with residents' interests, healthy urban environment standards, and environmental requirements.
