Parliamentarians Review Draft Law on Improving the Procedure for Electing Judges of Uzbekistan’s Higher Courts
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — At a session of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, lawmakers are considering a Senate legislative proposal to amend Article 21 of the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On the Rules of Procedure of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan.”
Currently, candidates for positions such as judges of the Constitutional Court, the chairman, deputy chairmen, and judges of the Supreme Court, as well as the chairman, deputy chairmen, members, and secretary of the High Judicial Council, are nominated by the President of Uzbekistan to the Senate.
Their election is considered at the next Senate session and is decided by a majority vote of the total number of chamber members.
The legislative proposal aims to improve the procedure for reviewing candidates. In particular, the amendments introduce a preliminary review of nominations by the responsible Senate committee, as well as preparation of a committee report based on the review.
A decision on this legislative proposal was duly adopted.
