New Airport in Bukhara Region Scheduled to Open in Q1 2027
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The new international airport in Uzbekistan’s Bukhara region is scheduled to be commissioned in the first quarter of 2027.
This was announced by Shahboz Khayitov, Deputy Director of Bukhara International Airport, during a broadcast on the Uzbekistan 24 television channel. According to him, the new aviation complex will have the capacity to handle more than 3 million passengers per year.
The project is being implemented under a public–private partnership model, with total investment estimated at US$226 million.
Construction is underway on a 377.7-hectare site outside the city limits, as further expansion of the existing airport located within Bukhara has been deemed technically impossible.
The new airport’s infrastructure will include a 3.3-kilometer runway designed to accommodate all types of aircraft, five taxiways, and 20 modern aircraft parking stands. The passenger terminal will have a throughput capacity of up to 1,200 passengers per hour.
To ensure transport accessibility to the facility, which is located 26 kilometers from Bukhara, construction of a new 29-kilometer access road is being carried out in parallel. Authorities note that by 2030 a significant increase in passenger traffic to the region is expected, which the current airport will no longer be able to handle.
At present, Bukhara International Airport serves around 400 passengers per hour, equivalent to approximately 1 million passengers per year.
A substantial share of tourists arrive in the city by rail and road. At the same time, plans are in place to increase tourist arrivals to Bukhara to 8 million people annually over the next three years.
Construction of the new airport began in May 2024 and is regarded as one of the key infrastructure projects aimed at boosting tourism and improving the region’s transport connectivity.
