NDPU Proposes Extension of Deadlines for Moped and Scooter Registration in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The People’s Democratic Party of Uzbekistan (NDPU) has put forward an initiative to extend the deadlines for obtaining driver’s licenses and registration plates for mopeds and scooters of category “A.”

Currently, owners of mopeds are required to obtain plates and licenses by 1 October, while the final deadline for registering older vehicles is set for 30 September.

According to the party, around 130,000 people are employed in courier services, relying mainly on bicycles, mopeds, and scooters. NDPU noted that the allotted time for receiving the required documents has proven insufficient.

“The government has indeed extended the deadlines, but given the large number of applicants, it is worth reassessing the feasibility of these requirements at the present time. Many citizens working in this sector support themselves and their families without external assistance,” the party said in its statement.

NDPU stressed that the mass introduction of new rules could leave hundreds of thousands of young people without a source of income, contradicting national priorities on poverty reduction and support for the self-employed.

The party proposed to review the deadlines and the amount of fees for obtaining licenses and registration plates, as well as to postpone the mandatory requirement for licenses until next year. A parliamentary inquiry on this matter is expected in the near future.

It should be recalled that in July 2024, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the design of license plates for mopeds and scooters.

According to the resolution, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Uzstandard Agency were tasked with preparing the regulation by October, while a ban on the use of unregistered vehicles was scheduled to take effect from January 2025.
