Navoi University Employee Detained for Taking a 35 Million Soum Bribe
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — In Navoi region, an employee of a state university has been detained on charges of bribery.
According to the regional department of the State Security Service, a joint оперативное operation was conducted together with the Department under the Prosecutor General’s Office. During the operation, an official of Navoi State University was detained with material evidence confirming the receipt of a bribe amounting to 35 million soums.
The money was allegedly intended in exchange for arranging the transfer of 189 million soums to the bank account of a limited liability company, funds that had been allocated for paying for the renovation of the university’s lecture halls.
A criminal case has been initiated against the detainee under Part 2, subparagraph “v,” of Article 210 of the Criminal Code of Uzbekistan. A preventive measure in the form of pre-trial detention has been applied, and investigative actions are ongoing.
It is noted that the detainee had previously been convicted, but, according to law enforcement authorities, failed to draw conclusions from past offenses.
