National Experts Trained on International Cancer Registry Standards under WHO and IARC Project
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — From 15 to 23 September, Uzbekistan hosted on-site training sessions on cancer registration, attended by specialists from across the country.
The events were organized by the World Health Organization with support from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the Global Initiative for Cancer Registry Development (GICR), and national partners.
During the program, 50 specialists received training on international standards for cancer registries, including case coding and staging, working with specialized software, data quality control, and analytical processing. Special attention was given to the registration of pediatric cancer cases.
Participants also took part in the National Oncology Conference, emphasizing that modern cancer registries are key tools for effective monitoring and prevention of oncological diseases.
During visits to Tashkent and Bukhara, specialists assessed the implementation of the new cancer registration system, identified local challenges, and provided recommendations for improvement.
This initiative lays the foundation for a modern cancer registry system in Uzbekistan, enabling the collection of high-quality, comparable data. Such data supports early disease detection, enhances treatment efficiency, and facilitates strategic planning of oncological care, ultimately saving lives.
The project is part of the “Support for the Development of Oncology Services, Phase II,” funded by the Islamic Development Bank in cooperation with the Government of Uzbekistan and the Ministry of Health.
