President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev participated in the opening ceremony of the monument. The monument to Islam Karimov was installed in the square near the Registan Square.

President Shavkat Mirziyoyev began his visit to Samarkand from a visit to grave of Islam Karimov. A memorial complex was erected on the site of the burial of the First President.

Shavkat Mirziyoyev also visited the parental house of Islam Karimov.

On 31 August 2017, a monument to Islam Karimov was opened in front of the Oqsaroy residence in Tashkent.
