Mirziyoyev Reviews Construction of New Football Stadium
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 24 March, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev inspected the progress of a major sports complex—a modern football stadium in New Tashkent. The cornerstone of the facility was laid by the president on 11 November 2025.
Construction is proceeding at an accelerated pace: the ground has been fully leveled, 95 percent of the foundation has been poured, and metal structures are being delivered to the site in stages.
In recent years, Uzbekistan has dramatically transformed its football infrastructure. The local championship system has been reformed, children’s and youth academies have been established, and 75 large and 302 mini-stadiums have been built.
By comparison, in 2017, only three stadiums in the country met FIFA and Asian Football Confederation standards. In addition, stadiums at 1,500 schools have been modernized, benefiting over one million students. Tournaments are now regularly held at the neighborhood, district, regional, and national levels for youth.
These efforts are already showing results: the national Olympic football team participated for the first time in the Paris Olympics, and the senior national team is preparing for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
On 2 October 2025, the FIFA Council approved Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan as hosts of the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup. Final and semi-final matches will require stadiums with a capacity exceeding 50,000 spectators.
The New Tashkent stadium, designed for 55,000 seats, is being built to meet this requirement. The complex will comply with all FIFA standards and become one of the largest modern football arenas in Asia.
The facility will include six floors with amenities for athletes, spectators, and media representatives, more than ten escalators for convenient crowd movement, three training fields, a metro station, and a parking lot for 5,500 vehicles.
President Mirziyoyev emphasized the importance of attention to detail in constructing such a large covered stadium and the need for phased landscaping of the surrounding area.
The new stadium will serve not only as a venue for the U-20 World Cup matches but also as a center for further development of football and youth sports across the country.
