Meeting with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights takes

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 26 February 2020, within the framework of the participation of the delegation of Uzbekistan headed by the First Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis Akmal Saidov, a bilateral meeting was held with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, at the next session of the UN Human Rights Council.

According to the Permanent Mission of Uzbekistan to the UN Office in Geneva, during the negotiations, the High Commissioner welcomed the large-scale reforms carried out under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Uzbekistan.

The parties exchanged views on the agenda of bilateral events for the near future, including the joint holding of the upcoming Samarkand Human Rights Forum. It is emphasized that it is a logical continuation of the Asian Forum on Human Rights, held in Samarkand in November 2018 and became the first such event on our continent.

Michelle Bachelet welcomed the steps taken by Uzbekistan to adopt the National Human Rights Strategy, as well as the initiative of the Uzbek side to develop a Convention on youth rights.

The High Commissioner was acquainted with the priorities and voluntary commitments of Uzbekistan in the event of election to the UN Human Rights Council for 2021-2023.

Michelle Bachelet praised the latest dynamics of the development of civil society institutions in Uzbekistan, in particular, the development of a code on non-governmental non-profit organizations, as well as the active involvement of the media and non-governmental organizations in the process of democratic transformation.
