Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - On 29 November 2019, a meeting of the Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbaeva with a delegation of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime headed by the head of the regional office Ashita Mittal took place.
During the meeting, UNODC implemented joint initiatives to support judicial and legal reform in Uzbekistan in the context of the Action Strategy for 2017-2021, including in the fight against human trafficking, as well as areas for further cooperation.
Ashita Mital praised the experience of Uzbekistan in returning its citizens from hot spots, assisting in their rehabilitation, as well as preventing crime. In her opinion, this practice deserves attention and study by other countries.
It was noted that the projects of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, implemented in the republic together with the relevant competent structures, contribute to increasing the effectiveness of law enforcement agencies by improving the collection and management of operational information between the authorities at the national, regional and international levels.
In this context, during the meeting, opportunities for expanding cooperation and further strengthening the legislative framework in the field of judicial reform and the fight against human trafficking were examined. The parties agreed on cooperation within the framework of the National Commission to Combat Trafficking in Human Beings and Forced Labor of the Republic of Uzbekistan, as well as the development of a “road map” for joint activities.
Within the framework of the meeting, the prospects for interagency cooperation within the framework of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime projects were also discussed.
