Major Road Infrastructure Modernization Launches in Tashkent

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Tashkent will undergo large-scale road repairs, installation of new traffic lights, and road marking works in 2025–2026 as part of a presidentially approved “road map” to establish an efficient transport management system.

The project includes the modernization of a 19-km section of the Small Ring Road (MKAD) from Ziyolilar Street to Shota Rustaveli Street.

A total of 150 billion soums has been allocated from the republican budget for these works. In addition, 164.1 km of city roads will undergo routine repairs, requiring 127.6 billion soums from the local budget.

The capital’s streets will receive 1.1 million square meters of new road markings, financed by the “Safe Road and Safe Pedestrian” Fund in the amount of 23.7 billion soums.

By 1 April 2026, 30 new traffic light facilities will be built or reconstructed at city intersections at a cost of 4.5 billion soums, and 264 intersections will be equipped with unified traffic light control systems as well as intelligent photo and video monitoring technologies.

The total cost of these activities is estimated at 226 billion soums, funded by foreign financial institutions and loans from international banks without government guarantees.

The project also envisions the construction of more than 57.5 km of dedicated bus lanes, a new overpass near the Zo’r TV studio, a tunnel under Amir Temur Avenue, and repairs to other roads.

To finance these works, US$271.1 million in loan funds is expected to be attracted from the Bank of China, with the involvement of Chinese contractors.

Implementation of the “road map” is expected to significantly enhance road safety and improve the efficiency of the capital’s transport system.
