Lawyer Detained in Sirdarya District for Extorting US$5,500

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — In Sirdarya District, a lawyer was exposed for abusing his official position by demanding US$5,500 for transferring a citizen, who was a suspect in a criminal case, from the temporary detention facility of the district’s Internal Affairs Department to Detention Center No. 8 in Khova District, and later for securing a favorable outcome in court.

During operational and investigative measures carried out by the State Security Service and the Prosecutor’s Office, the lawyer was detained while receiving US$4,500 and 6 million soums as material evidence.

It is noted that the lawyer had been appointed to provide state legal assistance to protect the rights of the suspect.

A criminal case has been opened against him under Part 3 of Article 168(b), Article 28, and Part 1 of Article 211 of the Criminal Code. Investigative actions are ongoing.
