Latvian President arrives in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- President of the Republic of Latvia Andris Berzins arrived in Uzbekistan on 27 May with an official visit at the invitation of President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov.

Prime Minister of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev welcomed the President of Latvia at the Tashkent International Airport.

The main events of the official visit of the President of Latvia to Uzbekistan will take place on 28 May. It is expected that President of Uzbekistan and Latvia will hold negotiatons.

The sides will consider prospects of consolidation of the interaction in the political, trade-economic, investment, cultural-humanitarian and other spheres.

After the talks, the sides will sign a joint declaration of the heads of state and a package of documents dedicated to boosting the Uzbek-Latvian mutually advantageous cooperation across diverse areas.

Latvia is Uzbekistan’s third largest trade partner among the countries of the European Union. The bilateral trade turnover exceeded US$248.8 million in 2013.

Uzbekistan exports cotton-fibre, oil products, fruits and vegetables, pharmaceutical products, mineral fertilizers, non-ferrous metals and other goods.

Latvia, in its turn, delivers textile equipment, electrotechnical products, products of machinery, foodstuff, pharmaceuticals, optical products, as well as transport services to Uzbekistan.

Currently, there are 21 enterprises with Latvian capital in Uzbekistan, while 19 Latvian companies accredited their offices at the Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations, Investment and Trade of Uzbekistan.
