Kristalina Georgieva: Uzbekistan’s Economy Grows 6.8% in 2025, Outpacing Global Rate of 3.1%
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 22 September in New York, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev held talks with International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva.
In an interview with the Uzbekistan 24 TV channel, Georgieva praised the country’s ongoing reforms and reaffirmed the Fund’s readiness to deepen cooperation. “We discussed the processes of economic growth. Uzbekistan is showing rapid progress with a growth rate of 6.8%, while the global economy is expanding by just 3.1%. This is a major achievement,” she noted. According to her, inflation in Uzbekistan is declining, which is particularly important for low-income groups, while poverty levels are also falling.
Special attention during the discussions was given to fiscal discipline and tax reforms. “We exchanged views on reducing the shadow economy and expanding opportunities for growth based on entrepreneurship and private sector leadership,” Georgieva said.
According to the presidential press service, Uzbek specialists are regularly trained at IMF educational centers. In 2025, a joint assessment of the financial sector’s resilience was carried out and a “roadmap” of further actions was approved.
As a result of the meeting, the parties agreed to expand IMF’s expert support in the areas of monetary and fiscal policy, transformation of the national statistics system, and the scaling up of educational programs for staff of Uzbekistan’s economic agencies.
