Kamolot holds project “Youth against smoking!”

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A wide-scale project “Youth against smoking!” started in all regions of Uzbekistan, which will be held from October to December 2013. The Public Youth Movement “Kamolot” initiated the project.

The project is aimed at decreasing spread and consumption of tobacco products among youth, promoting healthy lifestyle and norms of the law “On limiting spread and consumption of alcohol and tobacco products”.

According to official data of the World Health Organization (WHO), large number of people is dying in the result of smoking. Tobacco smoking is one of the most dangerous problems in the world. It is worth to mention that many youth believe that tobacco smoking is not a threat. About 64% of Uzbek population is youth at the age of up to 35, which means that Uzbekistan should carry out preventive works.

Within the project, it is planning to hold information session at educational establishments at universities and mahallas (neighborhood). Young trainers will be trained to conduct these sessions. Two trainers will be trained for each region.

The second direction is to promote work on training activists to inform sellers of trade points about the law “On limiting spread and consumption of alcohol and tobacco products”, in particular articles 13, 14 and 15, which bans realization of tobacco and alcohol products to people under the age of 20. The activists will also disseminate posters and stickers on danger of smoking.

The posters and stickers will include phone numbers of the Federation of Societies on protection of consumers’ rights. The people can address to these phone if they become witness of violation of the laws.

The project partners are Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education, Ministry of Public, Ministry of Healthcare, and Federation of Societies on protection of consumers’ rights.
