Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 28 February 2020, a meeting of the delegation of the Republic of Uzbekistan headed by Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov with US Special Representative for Afghanistan Zalmay Khalilzad was held in the capital of Qatar, Doha.

The parties discussed the current situation in Afghanistan, the parties’ efforts to launch the peace political process in this country as soon as possible.

Zalmay Khalilzad noted that Uzbekistan, under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, is implementing a completely new policy towards Afghanistan, based on the principles of friendship, good neighborliness and mutual understanding. This is recognized by both the Afghan people and other countries of the world, including the United States.

It was emphasized that the recent visit to Uzbekistan by US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo gave bilateral Uzbek-American relations a new powerful impetus for their further development, and determined the main prospects and directions of bilateral cooperation in the Afghan direction.

The American side also considers it important to continue cooperation with Uzbekistan on the implementation in Afghanistan of various projects aimed at restoring the country’s national economy. In this regard, Zalmay Khalilzad praised the efforts of the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev in this direction, especially emphasizing their integrity, practicality and focus on long-term results.
