Jizzakh Official Detained for Taking Bribe

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — In Jizzakh Region, the head of a district emergency services department was detained on charges of bribery.

In September, he received $200 from a local entrepreneur in exchange for approving project documentation for the construction of a multi-storey residential building. Later, the official demanded 6 million UZS for approving a private school project near the same building.

During an operational action conducted by the State Security Service and the Prosecutor’s Office, the official was caught receiving the money through his wife, effectively halting his illegal activity.

A criminal case has been opened under Part 2 of Article 210 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Uzbekistan (bribery), subparagraphs “a” and “v.” He has been placed in custody. Convictions for such crimes carry a prison sentence of 5 to 10 years.

Authorities noted that such actions by officials negatively impact business activity, hinder the implementation of reforms, and undermine public trust in government institutions.
