Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 25 November, under the auspices of the UN, an international conference on the theme “Aral Sea area - a zone of environmental innovation and technology” was launched in Nukus. Its goal is to improve public health and environmental quality in the region, as well as strengthen regional cooperation.
The event was organized by the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Ecology and Environmental Protection and the Scientific Information Center of the Interstate Commission on Sustainable Development in Uzbekistan (SIC ICSD) with the support of international organizations.
The Interstate Commission on Sustainable Development (ICSD) was created by the decision of the Interstate Council on the problems of the Aral Sea Basin (on 19 July 1994, Ashgabat). The Commission is entrusted with the coordination and management of regional cooperation in the field of environmental protection and sustainable development of Central Asian countries.
The main objectives of the ICSD are the development of a regional strategy for sustainable development, management of regional programs, action plans and projects in the field of environmental protection and sustainable development, coordination of actions in the implementation of the obligations of Central Asian countries to implement environmental conventions that have a transboundary aspect.
The conference will discuss issues such as the creation of conditions for attracting foreign investment in the development and implementation of environmentally friendly technologies, the comprehensive implementation of the principles of a green economy, environmentally friendly, energy and water saving technologies, the development of eco-tourism and others.
As part of the event, a ceremony was held for the transfer of the chairmanship of the ICSD from the Republic of Turkmenistan to the Republic of Uzbekistan, and a memorandum of understanding was signed between UNECE and ICSD.
