Inter-Parliamentary Union appreciates Parliament’s Human Rights Work

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- An article has been posted on the official website of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on the analysis and appreciation of this international organization for the work of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan to promote human rights. This was reported by the press service of the National Center of the Republic of Uzbekistan for Human Rights

In particular, as noted in the article, "IPU welcomes the latest measures of the Parliament of Uzbekistan to introduce international human rights standards at the national level."

“In accordance with the recommendation of the IPU, Uzbek parliamentarians recently organized a videoconference with the participation of several international and national organizations, during which the process of implementing the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, a multilateral treaty adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1966 and in force since 1976, was discussed. Participants touched upon such aspects as the development of civil society and a culture of the rule of law, reform of the penitentiary system, the independence of the judiciary, the eradication of child labor, gender equality and the fight against corruption,” the article says.

It is also noted that the Parliament of Uzbekistan is increasingly promoting the issue of ensuring human rights. In 2018, a parliamentary oversight mechanism was developed for the protection of human rights and the implementation of UN recommendations. The legislature adopted an action plan for cooperation with UN human rights mechanisms and published its first ever parliamentary report on human rights.

“The Uzbek parliament also works closely with the National Center for Human Rights and has played an important role in creating a mechanism to prevent torture and taking measures to stop forced labor - the two most frequently mentioned human rights issues in the country,” the work of the Oliy Majlis is further analyzed in the article.

It was noted that the videoconference mentioned above was organized against the background of the adoption of a new law on citizenship in Uzbekistan, which will enable almost 49 thousand people living in Uzbekistan to acquire citizenship of the country.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union in this analytical article emphasizes that the problem of “statelessness” over the past ten years has been a priority area of activity of the IPU. In 2018, IPU, together with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, published a guide for politicians and lawmakers entitled “Best Practices in Citizenship Laws to Prevent and Reduce Statelessness”. The document was intended to help effectively prevent new cases of statelessness and reduce their number.

“The IPU works closely with parliaments around the world to protect human rights. IPU assists other countries in the adoption by their parliaments of conventions on human rights and the effective implementation of national laws in this area. The Union also provides parliamentarians with information, knowledge and training to enhance their ability to protect human rights, especially for women, children, minorities and indigenous peoples,” the article goes on to say.
