Information on the status of compliance with international human rights obligations considered

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - The fourth plenary meeting of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, which takes place in the form of video conferencing, information from the National Center for Human Rights of the Republic of Uzbekistan on the status of compliance with international human rights obligations in 2018 – 2019 was considered.

It was noted that Uzbekistan has acceded to more than 70 international documents in the field of human rights, including 6 core treaties and 4 optional UN protocols. National reports on the implementation of these documents are submitted on an ongoing basis to the UN Council and the human rights treaty committees.

Recently, especially, the parliament of Uzbekistan has ratified important international legal documents on human rights. Thus, 4 conventions of the International Labor Organization, 3 treaties of the World Intellectual Property Organization, and a number of other international documents were approved.

Positive work has been done in the country to implement the norms of these international documents on human rights and freedoms in national legislation, and to develop national human rights institutions. Serious attention is also being paid to enhancing the role of civil society institutions in protecting human rights.

In addition, it was noted that the initiatives of Uzbekistan are supported at the UN level. In particular, the adoption by the UN General Assembly of the resolution “Spirituality and Religious Tolerance” is a confirmation of the implementation of the initiative of the President of the country put forward in the framework of the 73rd session of this international organization.

The Asian Human Rights Forum, held in November 2018 in Samarkand for the first time in the Asian region, adopted the Samarkand Declaration of Human Rights, which was approved as a document of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly, and in 2019 - the Tashkent Declaration on Youth Rights in Member States of the Islamic Cooperation Organization.

The visits to our country by the UN Secretary-General, the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the UN Special Rapporteur on religious beliefs and the rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers of the UN Human Rights Council were of great importance. It was especially noted that these visits became a big impulse to increase the prestige of Uzbekistan in the world community.

Along with this, during the meeting, attention was focused on the consistent observance of the recommendations of international and regional structures for the protection of human rights. In particular, today, in this direction, the practice of approving directly the Oliy Majlis of national action plans (“Road Maps”) has been introduced.

In 2019, large-scale events were held to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the 40th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.

In addition, at the meeting, taking into account the fact that Uzbekistan previously nominated a member of the UN Human Rights Council for the period 2021-2023, the need for all relevant political and diplomatic measures to achieve positive results was indicated.

According to the information of the National Center for Human Rights of the Republic of Uzbekistan, a corresponding resolution was adopted.
