Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — An industrial inflow of natural gas under high pressure has been recorded at a new exploratory well in the Muynak district of the Republic of Karakalpakstan. The discovery was made at the Shagirlik – Lower Jurassic No. 2 well, drilled near the Muynak field in the Ustyurt region, according to Uzbekneftegaz JSC.

The prospective area was prepared for deep exploratory drilling on the basis of 3D seismic survey data carried out by Uzbekgeofizika JSC and the State Unitary Enterprise Institute of Geology and Exploration of Oil and Gas Fields, both subordinate to Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Mining Industry and Geology.

Drilling operations were conducted by qualified specialists from the Project Office operating within the structure of the sector company. The Project Office was established on the instruction of the President of Uzbekistan and brings together experts with experience in leading international oil and gas companies, engaged to support the development of the national industry.

On 10 January 2026, the well was drilled to its design depth of 5,265 metres within the Lower Jurassic formations. Gas-saturated reservoirs were identified in the interval between 5,061 and 5,265 metres, delivering a strong inflow of natural gas, which confirms the industrial significance of the discovery.

To further study the geological structure of the Lower Jurassic deposits, refine reservoir parameters and determine the boundaries of their distribution in the area, the drilling of additional exploratory wells No. 3 and No. 4 is planned.
