From Voice to Data: How Tashkent Is Transforming Mobile Behavior

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Tashkent makes the fewest calls, but uses the most mobile data. Over the past five years, the number of 4G base stations in the city has grown by 1.5 times, while data consumption has surged nearly sixfold, according to analysts at Beeline Uzbekistan. The capital remains a digital frontrunner in the country, with almost all mobile traffic flowing through fourth-generation networks. The city is moving online — for work, study, and everyday life.

Since 2020, the number of 4G base stations in Tashkent has increased by 1,5 times. Beeline Uzbekistan’s technical teams focus on installing new stations in high-traffic areas — near transport hubs, public spaces, new residential complexes, and business centers — to ensure strong and stable connectivity, even during peak hours. The company is increasingly leveraging neural networks to analyze network loads, identify high-demand zones, and select optimal locations for new infrastructure. The number of logical sectors — which amplify signal and allow serving more users at the same time — has also grown almost fourfold in the capital.

These upgrades have delivered tangible results. Since 2020, the average mobile internet speed in Tashkent has more than doubled (2.2x increase). At the same time, weekly data usage per user has grown nearly six times, reflecting increased engagement with digital services among residents. In 2025, over 95% of all mobile traffic in the capital runs on LTE.

“Our goal is to ensure equal digital opportunities for users across all regions, so even the most remote areas can access convenient digital services,” said Gediz Sezgin, Chief Technology and Innovation Officer at Beeline Uzbekistan. “But Tashkent is a special case — almost a tenth of the country's population lives and works here. That’s why we test all technological innovations in the capital first, before scaling them to the rest of the country.”

While Tashkent continues to lead the nation in mobile data usage, it ranks near the bottom when it comes to phone calls. In May 2025, the average Beeline Uzbekistan user in the capital spent 645 minutes per month on calls — the second-lowest figure nationwide, just ahead of Khorezm. This trend has held steady for years; in May 2023, the capital showed similar results. It’s a sign of the times: Tashkent is rapidly becoming a digital hub, where mobile networks are used less for conversations and more for digital services, remote work, online education, and entertainment.
