First Deputy Minister of Economy of Uzbekistan Discusses Public Transport Modernization with World Bank
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 2 October 2025, Ilkhom Norqulov, First Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance of Uzbekistan, held a meeting with representatives of the World Bank.
The discussion involved Shomik Raj, Head of the Bank’s Transport Practice, transport specialists, and several responsible staff members.
During the meeting, the parties discussed modernizing the public transport system, improving the quality of transport infrastructure, and enhancing interregional connectivity.
Key topics included the accelerated creation of dedicated bus lanes in Tashkent and regional centers, expanding the use of electric buses, optimizing route networks, and implementing modern electronic payment systems.
Additional points of discussion covered the construction of bike lanes, equipping modern bus stops, improving road safety, effective traffic management, and reducing congestion.
World Bank representatives shared experiences from projects in France, the United Kingdom, and the United States, as well as initiatives in China, Morocco, Brazil, and other countries related to express bus routes, metro systems, and intelligent transport systems. It was noted that these experiences could be adapted to Uzbekistan’s conditions.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides agreed to continue cooperation on modernizing the country’s transport system. Joint projects with the World Bank aim to improve the quality of public transport, upgrade infrastructure, and strengthen interregional connectivity, providing citizens with safer, more convenient, and modern services.
