EU: Signing of EPCA with Uzbekistan Opens New Chapter of Cooperation
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 24 October, the European Union and the Republic of Uzbekistan signed the Extended Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (EPCA), marking an important step in strengthening bilateral relations and elevating them to a new strategic level.
According to the EU press service, the signing represents a key step in implementing the agreements reached at the EU–Central Asia Summit held on 4 April 2025 in Samarkand, opening new opportunities for political, economic, and social cooperation between the parties.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that the agreement reflects the EU’s commitment to deepening ties with Central Asian countries. “Today we are strengthening our long-standing relationship with Uzbekistan. The EPCA provides a framework for joint work for the benefit of citizens on both sides,” von der Leyen said.
Kaja Kallas, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, noted: “Uzbekistan is an important partner for the EU. Today’s agreement opens a new chapter in political, trade, and security cooperation. Human rights, civil society engagement, and democracy will be central elements of our partnership.”
Maros Šefčovič, EU Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, highlighted the economic impact of the agreement: “The EPCA strengthens economic and trade relations between the EU and Uzbekistan, creating opportunities for investment, new jobs, and sustainable economic growth, benefiting both European and Uzbek companies and consumers.”
