Egyptian Nile Sugar to Invest US$450 Million in Uzbekistan Sugar Project
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan is preparing to launch a large-scale sugar production project as Egyptian company Nile Sugar plans to invest US$450 million in the Jizzakh region. This was reported by Minister of Investments, Industry, and Trade Laziz Kudratov in an interview with Uzbekistan 24.
The project, financed through foreign direct investment, covers the entire production chain—from cultivating sugar beets to processing them into finished sugar. The new plant is expected to produce up to 200,000 tonnes of sugar per year, making it one of the largest in the country.
Minister of Agriculture Ibrokhim Abdurakhmonov emphasized that President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has instructed authorities to accelerate the project and maintain close oversight. “All necessary documentation is in place, land plots have been allocated, and investments are ready. We are tasked with launching the project in a short timeframe,” he said.
Nile Sugar first announced its plans to enter the Jizzakh market in July 2023. The project envisions cultivating sugar beets on approximately 52,000 hectares. In 2024, the Ministry of Agriculture designated 50,000 hectares in Gallaorol and Farish districts for beet planting and allocated 170 hectares for the construction of the processing plant.
On 23 January, Minister Laziz Kudratov met with Nile Sugar CEO Emad Farid, and the parties signed a final protocol confirming their readiness to continue joint work on project preparation and implementation.
The agreements reached are expected to pave the way for practical implementation, support phased deployment of joint initiatives, and promote local adoption of modern agro-industrial and processing technologies in Uzbekistan.
