EGRA and EGMA assessments can be conducted in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Ministry of Public Education of Uzbekistan (MoPE) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) discussed the assessment of reading and mathematics skills among primary school students in Uzbekistan, the press service of the ministry said.

On 18 February 2019, a meeting of representatives of the MoPE and USAID was held to discuss the assessment of reading and math skills among primary school students. The Uzbek side was headed by the First Deputy Minister of Public Education of Uzbekistan, Alisher Umarov.

The meeting addressed issues related to the organization of reading skills assessment (EGRA) and mathematics (EGMA). It was noted that these assessments will help to diagnose systemic gaps in teaching in primary school and to determine the best ways to improve performance.

These assessment systems are used in more than 70 countries of the world and are good tools for preparing for international research and programs for assessing the level of knowledge of students like PISA, TIMSS, PIRLS, etc. Representatives of the Ministry of Education and Science and USAID will continue discussions on conducting EGRA and EGMA assessments.

The parties during the meeting also discussed the issue of attracting an American expert to the Ministry of Public Education for implementation of an effective budget management system and attracting sponsorship.

It should be noted that in October 2018, a delegation of the Ministry of Education and Science, headed by Minister Sherzod Shermatov, visited the USA and held meetings with USAID representatives to discuss promising areas of cooperation. This meeting was a logical continuation of the negotiations in the United States.
