Draft Law on Extradition Between Uzbekistan and Hungary Approved by Legislative Chamber

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis has reviewed a draft law ratifying the Treaty between the Republic of Uzbekistan and Hungary on the Extradition of Persons Who Have Committed Crimes, signed in Budapest on 20 May 2025.

During the discussion, it was noted that the rising threats of terrorism, extremism, economic and organized crime require strengthening international cooperation and improving the legal framework in these areas.

Establishing intergovernmental legal assistance in combating crime and ensuring its systematic implementation is one of the priorities of the modern era. Until now, no treaty-based legal framework existed between Uzbekistan and Hungary on extradition, which limited opportunities for bilateral cooperation.

The treaty includes a preamble and 26 articles that define the procedures, principles, and conditions for extraditing individuals for criminal prosecution or for serving an existing sentence.

The entry into force of the document will enhance the effectiveness of cooperation between law enforcement agencies of both countries in investigating criminal cases and their adjudication in courts, ensuring the principle of accountability.

The draft law was approved by the deputies and forwarded for consideration by the Senate.
