Cooperation between governmental and non-governmental organizations is an important factor in ensuring gender equality

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 28 July 2020, a round table on the topic “Gender equality in Uzbekistan. The role and importance of state, non-state organizations and business in the prevention of violence against women” was held.

The event, organized by the Committee of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis on Women and Gender Equality in conjunction with the Commission on Ensuring Gender Equality of the Republic of Uzbekistan and international organizations, was attended by senior officials of over 50 non-governmental non-profit organizations under the Gender Commission of the republic, representatives of government agencies and the private sector.

The round table discussed issues of strengthening cooperation between state and non-state organizations to ensure the rights and interests of women, solving problems encountered in this direction.

It also considers ways to strengthen social partnership in order to provide social and legal services to women who have suffered as a result of an increase in the number of cases of family and domestic violence during the quarantine period.

In addition, information was provided on the activities of the Gender Commission of the Republic. It was noted that thanks to the work carried out by the Commission, recommendations were prepared on establishing the activities of advisory councils on gender equality issues in all ministries and departments.

Provisions were developed on conducting a gender-legal examination of regulatory legal acts and their projects, on issuing a protection order to women who have become victims of harassment and violence, ensuring its implementation and monitoring, a draft Strategy for Gender Equality in the Republic of Uzbekistan in 2020-2030. The website www.genkom.uz has also been launched. In addition, propaganda and outreach activities were carried out through the media, social networks, and official information sites.

However, there are a number of problems and shortcomings in the field of ensuring gender equality, which were mentioned separately. In particular, activities aimed at creating equal opportunities for women and men in government bodies and organizations should be coordinated.

The participants of the event were familiarized with the project "Development of civil society in Uzbekistan with the aim of supporting, protecting and empowering women", they were explained the goals and objectives of the activities carried out within the framework of this project.

The main problems encountered in establishing cooperation between state and non-state organizations on the way to achieving gender equality by ensuring the rights and interests of women are also considered, opinions are expressed on how to solve these problems.
