Construction Begins on China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan Railway in Kyrgyzstan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Full-scale construction work has begun along the entire Kyrgyz section of the international China–Kyrgyzstan–Uzbekistan railway, according to Bakyt Torobaev, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry of Kyrgyzstan. He made the announcement during a meeting with the heads of relevant national and local authorities.
According to the Kabar news agency, more than ten key issues related to the project’s implementation were discussed at the meeting. Government agencies received specific instructions to swiftly resolve any arising challenges. Torobaev emphasized that the importance of this project extends far beyond infrastructure, as it is intended to boost economic growth, improve citizens’ quality of life, and strengthen ties between nations and regions.
The railway segment within Kyrgyzstan spans over 304 kilometers. The total cost of the project is estimated at over US$4.5 billion. Due to the mountainous terrain, about 40% of the route will pass through tunnels and bridges, presenting significant engineering challenges. In particular, the plan includes the construction of 27 tunnels and 41 bridges. Completion of the railway is scheduled for 2030.
It is worth noting that construction of key infrastructure components began in April this year, following an official groundbreaking ceremony held in December 2024.
To mark the occasion, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev sent a congratulatory message to the participants of the event, highlighting the strategic importance of enhancing regional transport connectivity.
