Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan can serve as an example for many countries in the field of preventing racial or other discrimination, ensuring the harmonious coexistence of various ethnic, cultural and religious groups.
This was noted by experts from the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) during the anniversary, 100th session of the UN Committee in Geneva.
Here, the delegation of Uzbekistan, headed by the director of the National Center for Human Rights Akmal Saidov, presented on 3-4 December the next national reports of Uzbekistan on the implementation of the provisions of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD).
As A. Saidov emphasized during the presentation, in Uzbekistan, the observance and protection of human rights are considered as one of the priorities of state policy. The country’s efforts to ensure human rights are fully consistent with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
During the dialogue, the Committee members showed interest in ensuring interethnic harmony and tolerance in society, respect for national and universal values, practical application of legislative acts aimed at ensuring respect for the languages, customs and traditions of living nations and nationalities, and creating conditions for their development, the press service of the National Center for Human Rights of the Republic of Uzbekistan said.
According to the chairman of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, Amir Nureddin (Algeria), Uzbekistan is a cultural source and the country’s vision regarding the peaceful coexistence of various ethnic groups and religions is of interest to CERD members.
CERD Rapporteur on Uzbekistan Li Yanduan (PRC) emphasized that since 2016 the country has carried out a series of successful reforms in all areas and has made significant progress. She noted with satisfaction the country’s efforts to fulfill its obligations under the ICERD.
Committee members praised the ongoing reforms in Uzbekistan in the field of guaranteeing human rights and freedoms. The activities of the people’s receptions of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan were highlighted as a mechanism for direct communication with the population.
The International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination was adopted by resolution of the UN General Assembly in December 1965 and entered into force on January 4, 1969. The States Parties to the Convention are 176 States. The Republic of Uzbekistan acceded to the Convention on September 28, 1995.
