Antibiotics and Hormonal Medications in Uzbekistan Now Dispensed Only via Electronic Prescriptions

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — In Uzbekistan, antibiotics, synthetic antibacterial drugs, and hormonal medications are now dispensed in pharmacies exclusively via electronic prescriptions, the Ministry of Health announced, refuting social media reports claiming that the new system would take effect only from 15 January.

The ministry clarified that the mechanism was effectively implemented earlier and is already in practice. Claims about an “upcoming” tightening of rules are incorrect.

The Ministry of Health reminded that the minister’s order on the phased implementation of the “Electronic Prescription” system was approved and registered by the Ministry of Justice on December 15, 2025. The order came into force the following day, December 16, marking the start of the new procedure.

At the first stage, electronic prescriptions became mandatory for prescribing and dispensing antibiotics, synthetic systemic antibacterial drugs, and systemic hormonal medications. This category was prioritized due to the risks of self-medication and the need for enhanced medical oversight.

The ministry emphasized that the transition to electronic prescriptions is part of a broader digitalization of the healthcare system.

In the future, the list of medications requiring electronic prescriptions will be gradually expanded based on expert recommendations and public needs.
