ADB–CDIA Launches Study to Develop Climate-Resilient Water Supply and Sanitation in Uzbekistan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — ADB–CDIA has officially launched a project preparation study (PPS) to support Uzbekistan’s climate-resilient water supply and sanitation initiative. The PPS aims to improve access to water supply and wastewater treatment infrastructure in Andijan and Fergana regions, as well as in the Autonomous Republic of Karakalpakstan.
Uzbekistan, the most populous country in Central Asia with 37 million residents, faces growing climate risks—heatwaves, floods, and droughts—that threaten water and sanitation systems, as well as hygiene, food security, and infrastructure. The PPS will support the preparation of preliminary design and tender documents for priority investments to meet increasing demand while accounting for climate vulnerabilities in the targeted areas.
Under the PPS, ADB–CDIA, together with the consulting firm Eptisa, will identify strategic subprojects based on data analysis, current conditions, and consultations with stakeholders. Preliminary technical designs will be developed for two water treatment plants and six municipal wastewater treatment facilities, along with the corresponding technical specifications for subsequent Design-and-Build and/or Design-Build-Operate tenders.
Beyond engineering and procurement aspects, the study aims to strengthen the institutional capacity of JSC “Uzsuvtaminot” and municipal authorities. The PPS will also integrate gender inclusion and stakeholder engagement principles, ensuring that future investments are both climate-resilient and inclusive.
The study, expected to take approximately 12 months, will lay the groundwork for the development of water supply and sanitation infrastructure in Uzbekistan, supporting the country’s climate resilience goals, improving public health, and promoting sustainable economic growth.
