About 600,000 people with special needs live in Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan pays great attention to rehabilitation of the people with the disabilities. Eleven rehabilitation centers for them with 720 beds are operating at the system of the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of Population of Uzbekistan. Annually, 17,500 people with the special needs undergo rehabilitation at the centers.
As of 1 June 2015, about 2,971 people with disabilities received rehabilitation-technical means, 948 – wheelchairs, 561 – aerophones, 491 – crutches and 971 - walking sticks.
The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of Population of Uzbekistan has been cooperating with NGOs and international organizations such as JICA, KOICA and UNDP in this direction.
The government provides both legal and organizational, as well as material-technical conditions to protect rights of children with disabilities, including in the sphere of education. Children with physical and mental disabilities are enrolled in special educational institutions, including in specialized colleges in Tashkent and Fergana, related to the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of Population.
The Ministry operates homes for people with disabilities "Muruvvat" and "Sahovat". The main activities of such houses are to provide custody to people with physiological and psychological impairments.
