Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 26 June 2020, an international forum “Uzbekistan and the UN: cooperation on the way to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals” was held in videoconference format, which is dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the signing of the UN Charter and is held as part of the Cycle Global Discussion: “75th Anniversary of the United Nations: A Look into the Future”.
The event was organized by the National Center for Human Rights, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the UN Permanent Mission in our country.
In his speech, Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov noted that this event is a testament to Uzbekistan’s strong commitment to multilateral cooperation with the UN and its specialized agencies.
The adoption of the UN Charter 75 years ago laid a solid foundation for the modern world order, determined the progressive principles of international cooperation in solving global problems in the fields of peace and security, sustainable development and human rights. This historical document established an organization unique in its legitimacy and universality, uniting today 193 states.
As the Minister emphasized, the current global crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and affecting the lives of millions of people around the world, confirmed the importance of uniting the efforts of the entire world community to counter the serious consequences of the spread of coronavirus in the field of health and socio-economic development.
In these conditions, the leadership of the UN and its specialized agencies, programs and funds in responding to the pandemic and providing assistance once again demonstrated the effectiveness of multilateralism.
The Minister said that the 28-year-old constructive cooperation of Uzbekistan with the UN was full of significant events. Initiatives put forward by our country from the UN high rostrum have found full support from the international community and make a significant practical contribution to strengthening the global non-proliferation regime, ensuring universal peace, stability, sustainable development and regional solidarity.
Over the past three years, our interaction with the UN has intensified significantly. Regular dialogue at the highest level is established and maintained.
Uzbekistan is firmly committed to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Priorities of the Action Strategy implemented in our country for 2017-2021. fully consistent with the SDGs. As President Shavkat Mirziyoyev noted in his message to the UN Secretary General, Anthony Guterres, “both documents unite the main principle - “human interests are above all. ”
As noted, the recognition of Uzbekistan’s contribution to the UN was unanimously approved in 2018-2019 by the UN General Assembly of three resolutions proposed by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev on issues of ensuring peace, stability and sustainable development in Central Asia, education and religious tolerance, support and development of regional tourism.
Abdulaziz Kamilov said that Uzbekistan does not intend to stop there. Today, active work is underway to begin the negotiation process on the development and approval of the International Convention on the Rights of Youth. Uzbekistan’s candidacy for the UN Human Rights Council for 2021-2023 is being promoted.
In addition, this month the Government of Uzbekistan approved a comprehensive Road Map for the development of cooperation with the UN and its specialized agencies, which covers a wide range of issues of multifaceted interaction.
“We are convinced that the UN should continue to play a central coordinating role in international relations. For its part, Uzbekistan is firmly committed to continue to contribute to the activities of the UN, to strengthen close partnership with its specialized agencies and member states in order to implement the international agenda,” the Minister concluded.
