A Proposal Has Been Made to Tighten Control over the Sale of Over-the-Counter Medications In Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Alisher Kadyrov, leader of the “Milliy Tiklanish” party, has proposed strengthening accountability for the sale of medications without a prescription.

According to him, a significant portion of the pharmaceutical business prioritizes profit over public health, with patients often receiving expensive drugs, including dietary supplements, that have no direct therapeutic value.

“This is about eradicating the practice of turning a sick person into a commodity,” emphasized the lawmaker. He also suggested transferring potent medications, including antibiotics, to a “red prescription” category to eliminate their free sale in pharmacies.

Kadyrov noted that resistance to such initiatives may come from those interested in maintaining unrestricted drug trade and stressed that the decision to prescribe medications should rest with doctors, not pharmacies.
