Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) – From 27 September to 1 October 2019, the Congress of the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) was held in Barcelona, Spain, and doctors from Uzbekistan attended. This congress gathered more than 30 thousand oncologists, scientists, doctors from more than a hundred countries of the world.

It is worth noting that, thanks to the active and fruitful work to improve oncological care for the population, oncologists of Uzbekistan in 2017 joined the European Society of Medical Oncology. ESMO is rightfully considered to be one of the leading organizations uniting oncologists, oncologists, chemotherapists, radiation therapists, hematologists, pathomorphologists, scientists, nurses, representatives of pharmaceutical companies and patient organizations from all over the world.

Within 5 days, on the basis of the annual ESMO congress, thousands of specialists exchanged experience and knowledge, shared the latest results of clinical trials, primarily in order to improve the quality and accessibility of medical care for cancer patients. Dozens of workshops, educational lectures and opportunities for further career development of young oncologists were presented on this multi-disciplinary platform.

Within the framework of this major event, the delegation of Uzbekistan made a presentation on the status and development prospects of the oncological service of our republic. It is worth noting that in this Congress, Uzbekistan made a presentation for the first time. As the director of the Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center of Oncology and Radiology of Uzbekistan Mirzagaleb Tillyashaykhov noted in his speech, about 15 million patients with malignant neoplasms are registered annually in the world, in our country more than 100 thousand cancer patients are registered.

Given the relevance of this issue, in the framework of the relevant resolution of the President of the country Shavkat Mirziyoyev and under the leadership of the head of state, over the past three years, a number of measures have been taken to develop the oncological service and improve oncological care for the population. Today, modern standards for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer are developed and introduced into clinical practice.

Work is underway to introduce screening programs, local center staff have conducted training seminars among specialists, and a pilot screening project for esophageal and gastric cancer has been launched in January 2019. After acquiring a video laparoscopic surgical complex, high-tech operations are performed for the first time in the republic, such as video laparoscopic nephrectomy, nephrectomy with thrombectomy, kidney resection, radical cystectomy, hysterectomy, and rectum and colon resection. Also, radiosurgical stereotactic radiation therapy is carried out in the country. Over the past two years, the provision of anticancer drugs has improved significantly and reached 90-95 percent.

The development of the sphere is also facilitated by the establishment of close ties with international organizations, leading clinics of foreign countries, and the constant exchange of experience with the best specialists in the world. Every year, more than 50 specialists take advanced training courses at the expense of the state in clinics in Russia, the USA, Korea, Turkey, Poland, India, Belarus and others.
